Solar Power for Van Conversions: A Practical Guide

Solar keeps batteries topped between drives. Panel wattage depends on daily use, not roof size alone.

Sizing roughly

List daily watt-hours: fridge (largest steady load), lights, charging phones, fan. Divide by usable sun hours (often 3–5). Add 20% margin. A weekend fridge + lights build often lands at 200–400W of panel.

Mounting

Use roof racks or direct mount with proper sealant and backing plates. Plan cable entry with waterproof glands. Leave walking paths if you need roof access.

Charge controller

MPPT controllers squeeze more from panels than PWM on larger setups. Size to panel current and battery voltage (12V vs 24V systems).
