How to Build a Bed Platform in Your Van

The bed platform is often the largest carpentry project—and the best storage opportunity.

Height

Measure sitting on mattress plus bedding. Leave garage clearance if you park in low structures. Many builds use 10–14 inches of storage height underneath.

Construction

Frame with 2×3 or 80/20 aluminum. Support on factory tie-down points, not sheet metal alone. Slatted base or plywood with ventilation gaps for mattress moisture.

Access

Lift-top or drawer systems need clearance for hinges and drawer slides. Test with full-weight bedding before finishing trim.
