Building a Van Kitchen Galley Step by Step

A galley is more than a counter—it is stove clearance, spice storage, and a place to chop vegetables without losing tomatoes to the parking brake.

Dimensions

Counter depth around 18–22 inches works in most vans. Leave knee space if you cook sitting. Secure fridge with strap or dedicated enclosure.

Stove choice

Many builders use two-burner propane or butane camp stoves with ventilation and a CO detector. Fixed propane systems need professional leak testing where required.

Build order

  1. Upper cabinets last—they shrink headroom if built too early
  2. Run electrical behind walls before closing galley back
  3. Seal countertop edges against splash moisture
