The Honest Truth About Van Build Costs

Most "budget van build" videos on YouTube are sponsored by tool companies, panel companies, and mattress brands. Our numbers come from community members who tracked every receipt. No sponsorships, no inflated estimates, no hidden costs buried in fine print.

📌 Before You Budget The van (or bus) purchase is separate from the build cost. A used cargo van costs $8,000–$25,000. A school bus runs $5,000–$15,000. Add build costs on top of that.

⚠️ The Hidden Costs Nobody Talks About Registration changes, insurance (vanlife insurance is its own category), vehicle mechanical work before conversion, campsite fees during build, and the tools you'll buy twice because you bought the cheap version first.

Where to Save vs Where to Spend

Spend More On:

  • Batteries — cheap AGM costs you more over 3 years than quality lithium
  • Roof fan — you'll use it every single day; get a Maxxair not a $30 box fan
  • Fridge — a quality 12V compressor fridge pays for itself in spoiled food averted
  • Insulation — the one thing you cannot easily fix later

Save Money On:

  • Flooring — vinyl plank looks great and costs 1/5 of hardwood
  • Furniture hardware — IKEA and hardware stores beat van-specific retailers
  • Water storage — food-grade containers work as well as $200 "vanlife" tanks
  • Curtains and soft furnishings — thrift stores and fabric stores win here
